Tips for Organizing Your Closet

1 ย The first step to organize your closet is to eliminate everything you don’t wear, love or feel good wearing. Empty your closet out and go through everything.

2 Add additional shelving and bars to accommodate your clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. Closet organization systems are available at home improvement centers or you could hire a professional to assist you.

3 Organize your closet so that everything is visible and accessible. If items are stored in a box, make them visible by putting a label on it.

4 Use fabric or plastic bins, baskets and decorative boxes to organize the smaller items in your closet. Then label them. Be careful to avoid putting fragile fabrics in anything with rough edges.

5 Keep like items together such as tops, skirts, pants, etc. Organize your closet by hanging tops according to sleeve length and arrange according to color.

6 ย If space is available, store belts and scarves by hanging them on hooks mounted on the wall. Or you could roll them up and store them in a labeled box.

7 Invest in decent hangers. Use only wooden, plastic or padded hangers. Never use wire hangers; they’re not strong enough and can ruin the shape of clothes. Purchase specialty hangers for pants, skirts, suits, coats, etc.

8 Utilize the space on the inside of the door to help organize your closet. You can hang a plastic pocket shoe holder to hold shoes or accessories, install a robe hook, or add a tie-rack.

9 Stuff a bunch of plastic shopping bags into another one and use it to fill out empty purses so they can maintain their shape when you’re not using them.

10 Keep shoes clean by storing them in clear plastic boxes or shoe boxes. If you use clear plastic boxes, they’ll all be the same size and easier to stack. Tape a picture of the shoes or put a label on the outside of the box.

Came across your site last week and read your tips for organizing a closet. I was inspired that I started cleaning out my closet right away. I realized I have some clothes I no longer wear and can donate to local charities. Though I’m still working on my closet, but am enjoying the process. After this ‘project’, I’m going to tackle organizing my accessories. Any ideas?

Any tips for lighting an apartment, sliding doors, closet? I can’t see what’s in there and recently took all my shoes out because of it.

You can use battery operated LED lights that you can either stick-on or hang up on the wall inside the closet. I’ve used these types of lights before, Beth and they work great. Here’s one I found on Amazon.com by doing a search for “stick-on lights” – http://amzn.to/1nKkd85 These lights are also available at most home improvement stores, Target, Walmart, etc. ๐Ÿ™‚
