Doing laundry probably isn’t anyone’s favorite chore. Granted, today’s washing machines and dryers have made it almost effortless. I’m thankful that I don’t have to take it down to the stream and beat it on a rock. However, there are still ways to make it a bit easier. Even though the machines do the washing and drying, there are lots of things that need to be done before and after that take up a lot of time. The laundry tips I’m sharing today will help you save some of the time you spend doing those things. And for more helpful tips, check out my post on ideas for creating an organized, efficient and fabulous looking laundry room.
1 Set a laundry schedule. Let the family know what time their laundry has to be in the laundry room and what time they can pick it up. This way you won’t have to spend time running around the house gathering everyone’s dirty clothes on laundry day.
2 It’s easier to do laundry when everything has already been sorted. In the laundry room assign a basket, bin or bag for each type of load. As family members bring in their dirty clothes, separate them into the baskets. As soon as one basket is full, it’s time to wash that load.
3 Get your family into the habit of turning all their clothes right side out before they put them in the dirty laundry. This will save you from having to do everyone’s clothes before you put it in the wash.
4 To keep from having to spend time matching socks, have family members pin each pair together before putting it in the laundry basket. If that’s not happening, throw all the clean socks in one basket and have the kids match them up. You can even make a game out of it. The one that matches the most socks wins!
5 If you do laundry at night, start a load in the morning and toss it in the dryer when you get home. It’s okay to run the washer when you’re not there, but don’t run the dryer when you’re not home.
6 Give each family member their own laundry basket for clean clothes. Label it with their name. Make it their responsibility to check the laundry room each day to see if they have clothes to bring back to their room. If you don’t have room for baskets, add some shelves and label their spot.
7 Even though most clothes are “permanent press”, they can still get wrinkled if you leave them in the dryer too long. Cut down on your ironing time by hanging clothes up as soon as they are done drying.
Doing the laundry probably isn’t going to rank as one of your favorite things to do, but these tips will help save you time. Then you can spend it having fun doing something that brings you joy. Do you have any tips that help save you time and effort when doing laundry?
