My daughter and I were discussing different design styles the other day. As an interior decorator, I have the opportunity to work with all different styles. It’s one of my favorite things about the job. My daughter and I both agreed that we really like the look of cottage style homes. With that on my mind, I was delighted when I happened upon this fabulous East Hampton, New York home featured at Traditional Home.
Cottage Style Homes: East Hampton Home Tour
Built in the 1920’s, this home underwent a complete makeover which included new additions. The owners, she’s an interior designer and he’s a former art dealer, acted as their own general contractors. Because of this, the process was completed in only 3 months time. In the additional spaces the homeowners made sure period details, such as moldings and millwork, were consistent with those used in the original house.
The old staircase was torn out of the living room and relocated to a new two story foyer. Lots of windows were installed in the living room allowing plenty of natural light to fill the space. Windows also provide a view to the outdoors in the small seating area set up in the breezeway.
The white kitchen is fully equipped with modern conveniences, but maintains the integrity of the home’s past. Elements like the white beadboard ceiling and choice of Victorian style faucets give the kitchen a vintage flair. An antique wood table from France serves as a desk in the pantry while an antique dining table welcomes guests to the dining room.
The owner has a love of Swedish style that is evident in the blue and white master bedroom. Wooden lamps on the side tables have been painted to look like Swedish antiques. Two-legged sinks continue the vintage charm in the master bathroom.
Vintage white wicker chairs are combined with blue and white cushions to create an inviting space for entertaining. This outdoor patio is the perfect spot to view the lovely gardens.
