One of the easiest ways to transform anything is with paint. This holds true for stairs, too. Bare stairs are excellent candidates for creative painting. From color blocking to patterns, the possibilities are endless. You can even jazz up the spindles with paint.

If you are a lover of literature or have a favorite quote, use the risers as a canvas to express yourself. You can let the whole family help choose the book titles or quote for the staircase.

Have fun with your design. Go all out with bold stripes or help the kids learn to count.

You don’t have to be a great artist to make your stairs special. Use decals, wallpaper or stencils to create the look you want. It’s never been easier.

Staircase Ideas: Painted stair runner

Even if you have carpeted stairs, you can still give it some pizzazz by selecting a carpet that is colorful or patterned. You could also had a splashy stair runner or paint one yourself.

Staircase Ideas: Heavy nautical rope used as a stair rail

Staircase Ideas: A slide attached to the stairs

These two I added just because they are so much fun. The rope rail would look fabulous in a beach or lake cottage. (Note: You’d want to make sure it followed building codes and was completely safe.) As for the slide, I’ve always loved them. If I could have this in my home now, it would be up tomorrow!

When decorating your home, don’t overlook the staircase. Just like the ceiling, it’s another opportunity for you to express your personal style. Which of these staircase ideas do you like the best?

Hi Melanie! That’s actually a painted stair runner; at first glance I thought the stairs were painted, too. You could easily paint that pattern right on the steps, though. It would give the appearance of a runner with a fun design! :)

I’m usually not a fan of going all crazy with the staircase, but I LOVE the one with the stair risers painted to look like books! I also really like the rope rail. That would look amazing in a beach house or one with a nautical theme!

Could you share where the 5th from the bottom photo originated? I hope to do something similar and love the wallpaper patterns used- the blue birds with blues, greens, and yellow/ivory tones…hoping to find where I can buy.
    Thanks!

The photo came from Better Homes & Gardens (all the image sources are sited at the bottom of the post). I double-checked for you; unfortunately, it didn’t list a source for any of those wallpaper patterns. You should be able to find something similar online or at a wallpaper store. Let me know if you need any wallpaper sources for your search.
