Dining Rooms with Fireplaces

Ask the Decorating Files. It’s time to answer another reader question about dining rooms with fireplaces…

Is it okay to put dining table in front of the fireplace instead of a couch or seating area? ~ Mary P.

Short answer – Yes! Just because the floor plan or builder calls it the living room or family room doesn’t mean you have to use it for that purpose. It’s okay to switch around rooms. Adapt them to suit your needs or desires.  Fireplaces are a great feature and make any room more cozy. If you’d rather your dining room have the fireplace than your living room, then I say go for it. Imagine how wonderful it would be to enjoy dinner with family and friends in front of the glow and warmth of a fireplace.

Having a fireplace in the dining room is a very appealing feature and it offers an instant focal point. But be sure to take the proper safety precautions when arranging your furniture. Keep furniture a minimum of 3 feet from the center of the fireplace and make sure their is a firescreen to keep sparks from flying.

For your inspiration, I’ve found 12 dining rooms with fireplaces that range from traditional styling to urban chic.

You’re very welcome, Sabrina. I’m delighted you enjoyed the post. Moving the fireplace up was an excellent idea. I went to a restaurant once that had several individual dining rooms with about 8 tables and a fireplace in each one. The fireplaces were raised so all tables in the rooms could enjoy them. The ambiance was amazing. :)

In my opinion, a house can never have too many fireplaces. If there’s one in the dining room, all the better!

The idea of raising the height of the fireplace makes so much sense! These rooms are so inspiring, but I would kill for the outdoor one!

Even though I live in Florida, I love using my fireplace. It would be wonderful to have one in the dining room, too. Thanks for stopping by Doreen. I always love to hear from you! :)
