Decorating on a budget doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. There are many things you can do to give your home a designer touch without breaking the bank. Here are 10 home decorating tips that I shared on the blog when I first began The Decorating Files. I felt it was time to revisit them in case you might have missed them the first time around.
Home Decorating Tips
1 Give a pre-fab bookcase a touch of personality. Before nailing on the back panel, cover it with a fun wallpaper or fabric that coordinates with the room’s décor.
2 Don’t overdo the accessories. One larger item on a shelf or tabletop can make a much stronger statement than a number of small ones.
3 Install shelves on a wall to display your art or photographs. You can then change your arrangement as often as you want and you won’t have to worry about repairing the holes each time. If you paint the shelves the same color as the wall, they will almost disappear.
4 To display collections, group them together. Don’t lose the smaller items in the group; elevate them on stands, books or decorative boxes to help them stand out.
5 Paint the inside of a china cabinet or kitchen cabinets with a vibrant color. Whatever you put inside of it will really stand out.
6 Have the perfect lamp, but it’s just not tall enough? Place it on a stack of books or decorative boxes to elevate it. Make sure that your “pedestal” isn’t wobbly, though.
7 Art doesn’t always have to been hung on a wall or placed on a shelf. Try something a little different. Hang your artwork on the front of a bookcase.
8 Dress up the look of plain wall-to-wall carpeting by adding area rugs. Yes! You can layer rugs on top of each other. This is a great way to bring in color and pattern.
9 If you have two matching twin beds with headboards and footboards, take the footboard off one and replace it with the other headboard. Your bed will now consist of 2 headboards and 2 rails. Voila! You have turned your plain twin beds into one new daybed. Add some fluffy throw pillows and you’ve created a welcoming spot anyone would want to curl up on. Country Living has a great tutorial for turning two twin headboards into a daybed.
10 Use bright colorful matting in place of white or cream to accentuate a piece of art. Then carry that color into the room with accessories or fabrics.
Decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune to be fabulous. These home decorating tips will help you create a stylish home and still stay on budget.
